Matt Campbell and his coaching staff are back at it again. This time, getting a great start to the 2014 recruiting campaign. The first domino to fall was the signing of Detroit Cass Technical linebacker, William White. Campbell and the Rockets coaching staff offered White on October 1, but White had a dream of playing in the Big Ten. A few weeks later, on November 8, that dream came true when Indiana offered White a scholarship. Ultimately, he decided to be patient, instead of jumping on board with the Hoosiers right away, keeping the Rockets in the mix. Following the Hoosiers offer, the Cincinnati Bearcats also came calling, offering White his third scholarship just two weeks later.
After visiting the Indiana campus in October and again in early February, it seemed like a sure thing that White would end up in Bloomington. However, White shocked everybody by verbally committing with the Toledo Rockets on April 18.
"I love the coaches and the program," White said, "Overall it's a great fit for me."
With White's commitment, he becomes the first player to commit in the Rockets 2014 recruiting class. After having 23 commitments in the 2013 recruiting class, head coach Matt Campbell will look to continue adding play makers to his roster.
Despite White's verbal commitment to Toledo, there are still questions as to if he'll stay with his commitment. Before receiving the offers from the Rockets, Hoosiers, and Bearcats, White visited Michigan State University, and also had attended a camp there. When I asked White if he would stay with the Rockets even if the Spartans offered him, he responded, "Of course I would!"
White was a defensive standout during his junior season at linebacker, recording 142 tackles and 12 sacks, and leading the Technicians to a Division 1 Michigan State Championship. He'll look to continue his dominance during his senior season, before becoming a Toledo Rocket next season.
